Before any Use Group R-3 (one and two family dwelling) is sold or leased, or otherwise made subject to a change of occupancy for residential purposes, the owner shall obtain a certificate of smoke detector compliance (CSDC), evidencing compliance with the New Jersey Fire Code via the Fire Prevention Bureau.
Smoke detectors are required to be installed as follows:
- On each level of the premises; and outside of each separate sleeping area within ten feet of any bedroom.
- They shall be located in accordance with NFPA 74-1984 and maintained in good working order. A certificate is valid for thirty days and is not transferable.
